Safe Landing Practice: Finish Every Jump in Control

A jump may attract attention, but the landing decides whether the run continues. Safe Landing Practice focuses on the quiet skills behind reliable racing: reading the road angle, ending rotation early, allowing the suspension to work, and responding calmly when touchdown is not perfect.

Read the landing before correcting

Do not rotate simply because the motorcycle is airborne. First identify the surface ahead. A flat road asks for a nearly level wheel line. A downhill slope needs the front wheel slightly lower, while an uphill slope needs it slightly higher. The road, not the screen horizon, is the correct reference.

Estimate where the bike will touch down. The visible point directly below the motorcycle is not always the landing point because forward momentum continues during descent. Look farther along the travel path and prepare for that section of road.

Separate the stunt from the landing

Think of airtime in two phases. The stunt phase begins after takeoff and ends around the apex. The landing phase begins once the bike starts a clear descent. Complete large flips during the first phase. During the second, use only small corrections that improve alignment.

  • Start rotation after both wheels leave the ramp.
  • Finish the main trick near the highest point.
  • Release the tilt input and observe the bike.
  • Use one light correction during descent.
  • Prioritize tyre alignment over extra style.

Control angular speed

The angle of the bike matters, but so does how quickly that angle is changing. A motorcycle can look aligned for an instant while still rotating rapidly toward a crash. Stop adding spin early enough for the smooth physics damping to reduce angular speed before contact.

If the bike is rotating too far backward, tap the forward tilt rather than holding it. If the nose drops too quickly, use a short backward correction. Allow time to see the result before pressing again.

Match different surfaces

Flat landing

Place the wheels close to level. A slight rear-wheel-first angle is usually manageable, especially when forward speed is high.

Downhill landing

Lower the front wheel to match the descending road. Landing level on a steep downhill can cause the rear tyre to strike first and bounce the bike forward.

Uphill landing

Keep the front slightly raised. A nose-down touchdown on an incline risks contacting the rider or frame before the wheels can absorb the impact.

What to do at contact

  1. Stop major tilt inputs just before touchdown.
  2. Let the first tyre establish contact.
  3. Avoid immediate full acceleration during compression.
  4. Wait until the bike follows the road angle.
  5. Resume speed smoothly once both tyres are stable.

The suspension needs a brief moment to absorb vertical force. Aggressive acceleration during that moment can raise the front wheel or amplify a bounce. Calm input protects the landing and usually preserves more speed overall.

Recover from imperfect landings

If the rear tyre lands first, allow it to roll and lower the front gently. If the front tyre lands first, avoid adding more forward rotation; use a small backward correction as the suspension settles. When the motorcycle bounces, treat the bounce as a second small jump and align again rather than panicking.

A rough landing is not automatically a failed landing. Recovery depends on reducing extra movement and returning the wheel line to the road. The earlier you recognize the problem, the smaller the correction can be.

Practice with a repeatable drill

Choose a medium-sized jump with a wide landing. Use the same approach speed on five attempts. First land without a stunt. Next add a half rotation and recover. Then complete one flip and stop rotation at the apex. Consistent speed lets you isolate landing technique instead of solving a different trajectory every time.

Landing mistakes that waste runs

Late, continuous rotation is the most common issue. Another is staring at the motorcycle until the road disappears from attention. Riders also accelerate the instant a tyre touches, mistaking contact for stability. Finally, attempting an extra flip during descent leaves no time to correct.

Make every jump complete

A stunt is not finished when the rotation ends; it is finished when the bike returns to stable movement. Read the slope, manage angular speed, respect the suspension, and treat recovery as a normal skill. Is landing on one wheel always bad?

No. A slight rear-first landing can be safe when the bike closely matches the road. Danger comes from a large angle, high angular speed, or aggressive throttle during impact.

What should I do after a bounce?
